Description

A faunistic survey conducted from July to September 2022 recorded 34 new occurrences of the ragweed leaf beetle (Ophraella communa) across ten counties in continental Croatia. The findings indicate that the species is rapidly spreading, causing significant damage to Ambrosia artemisiifolia, with potential for use in biological control efforts.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 68 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Random visual observation and sampling methods were used to assess beetle populations at all sites. The monitored area was 1 m2, in which the presence (and developmental stages) of O. communna and the readings of damage on ragweed plants were recorded. The number of plants within monitored square meter depended on common ragweed population and varied from four to six plants.

Study Extent From mid-July to the end of September 2022, O. communa was monitored at 34 sites on the Croatian mainland (in 10 counties).

Method step description:

  1. Species identification The species O. communa was identified using SMARTER (2014) and Warchałowski (2010). Ragweed damage assessment To determine the percentage of damage to common ragweed plants, all plants were examined in an area of 1 m2. The percentage of damage was calculated based on the destroyed leaf area of all plants present on the monitored area.
